A practical guide

Online or face to face?

We offer online counselling across the UK and face-to-face sessions in Birmingham. Think about where you can speak comfortably, privately and regularly.

Online counselling

Online sessions let you meet your counsellor by video without travelling. This may make attending easier around work, caring responsibilities, health or distance.

You will need a device with a camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection and somewhere you can speak without being overheard. Headphones may help you hear clearly, but they do not stop others hearing your side of the conversation.

Face-to-face counselling

Face-to-face sessions take place in Birmingham. Some people value being in the same room as their counsellor or having a space away from home and everyday responsibilities.

Consider the journey, the appointment time and any access needs. If you have questions about getting to us or using the building, contact the team before booking.

Questions to help you choose

  • Where will I have enough privacy to speak freely?

  • Can I attend this way regularly without travel or technology becoming a barrier?

  • Do I feel more comfortable at home or in a separate counselling space?

  • Would an access or communication adjustment help me take part?

Neither format is the right answer for everyone. If online sessions leave you worried about being overheard, a face-to-face appointment may be more practical. If travel makes attendance difficult, online may be easier.

What stays the same?

Sessions last 50 minutes and usually take place weekly. In both formats, you have time with your counsellor to talk at your own pace, with confidentiality and its limits explained.

The format does not decide your fee. Fees depend on whether you choose matched counselling or Choose Your Counsellor. See the fee options.

If you are unsure or need a change

Ask us about the available options before booking. Format and appointment choices depend on counsellor availability.

If your circumstances change during counselling, discuss this with your counsellor or the team. A different format may be possible, but we cannot assume that every counsellor can offer both.
