A practical guide
Your questions answered
A few practical answers about sessions, privacy and what happens if you want something to change. You can ask questions before starting or at any point during counselling.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no single number that suits everyone. Some people come for a shorter period; others find longer-term counselling useful. You and your counsellor can review what you need and whether sessions are helping.
You do not have to decide the full length of counselling before you start. Talk about any limits on time or cost so these are part of the discussion.
How long and how often are sessions?
Sessions last 50 minutes and usually take place weekly. Fortnightly sessions may be available on request if you choose the let us find you a counsellor route at £35 per session. Discuss what is appropriate and sustainable for you.
For supported places, payment arrangements and cancellations, see our fees page.
Is counselling confidential?
What you share is treated as private. There are limits where there is a serious risk of harm, a safeguarding concern or a legal duty to share information. Your counsellor will explain these boundaries and aim to discuss any concern with you wherever possible.
Records are held securely, with access limited to authorised people. Ask your counsellor if you would like to understand how notes, supervision or your information are handled.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can contact us and book through the website yourself. You do not need a diagnosis or a referral letter.
We do not routinely share your counselling information with your GP, employer or family without your consent. The safety and legal exceptions to confidentiality still apply. You can use counselling alongside other care where appropriate.
Can I change counsellor?
Yes, you can ask to discuss a change. You can raise a concern with your counsellor or contact the team if you would prefer. We will discuss what is not working and the available next steps.
A different match may depend on your needs and counsellor availability. If a specialist need becomes clear on the let us find your counsellor route, we can discuss a more suitable match.
How do I end counselling?
You can decide to stop. Where possible, talk with your counsellor about ending so you can reflect on the work and what comes next. You do not have to continue because you have already started.
Tell us promptly and make sure future appointments are cancelled. The cancellation terms apply to sessions already booked, including the requirement to give at least 48 hours’ notice when cancelling or rearranging. See fees and cancellation information.
What if I have a concern?
Counselling should feel respectful and safe. You can raise a concern with your counsellor or contact the team, including if you would like information about making a complaint.
