Person-Centred Counselling
What person-centred counselling means
Person-centred counselling is based on the idea that people have an innate capacity to understand themselves and move toward growth when the right conditions are in place.
Rather than directing or advising, the counsellor focuses on creating a relationship that feels respectful, genuine, and non-judgemental. This allows you to explore your experiences openly and at your own pace.
How this approach works in practice
In person-centred counselling, the counsellor:
Listens carefully and attentively
Seeks to understand your experience from your point of view
Offers empathy and acceptance
Avoids imposing interpretations or solutions
You decide what to bring to each session. There is no expectation to work in a particular way or talk about specific topics unless you choose to.
Who this approach can be helpful for
Person-centred counselling may suit you if you:
Want space to talk freely without being directed
Value being listened to and understood
Are exploring identity, relationships, or emotional wellbeing
Prefer a collaborative, respectful style
Many counsellors use person-centred principles alongside other ways of working.
