Why the Relationship Matters in Counselling
The counselling relationship
Research and experience consistently show that the quality of the relationship between counsellor and client is one of the most important factors in counselling.
Feeling heard, respected, and understood creates the conditions where reflection and change can take place.
What a helpful counselling relationship includes
A strong therapeutic relationship is usually characterised by:
Trust and confidentiality
Emotional safety
Clear boundaries
Mutual respect
This does not mean counselling is always comfortable, but it should feel contained and supportive.
When the relationship doesn’t feel right
It is important to notice how counselling feels for you. If something does not feel right, it is okay to:
Raise this in the session
Ask questions
Consider a different counsellor
Counselling is a service you are choosing. Feeling able to speak openly about the process itself is part of ethical practice.
