When Counselling Isn’t Enough
Understanding the limits of counselling
Counselling offers emotional support and a space to reflect, but it cannot meet every need on its own.
There are times when additional or different support may be necessary.
Situations where other support may be needed
Counselling may not be sufficient if:
You are at immediate risk of harm
You require medical assessment or medication
You need urgent crisis intervention
You require specialist or mandated services
In these situations, counselling can sometimes work alongside other support, but it is not a replacement.
Talking about this openly
Ethical counselling includes being honest about limits. If counselling does not feel enough, this can be discussed openly, and you may be supported to find other forms of help.
