Counselling vs Therapy: Explained

Why the terms can be confusing

The terms counselling and therapy are often used interchangeably. In everyday use, both refer to talking with a trained professional about emotional or psychological difficulties.

Common distinctions

Sometimes:

  • Counselling refers to support focused on current difficulties and life challenges

  • Therapy refers to longer-term or more in-depth work

In practice, there is significant overlap, and the experience may feel very similar.

What matters most

Rather than focusing on labels, it can be more helpful to consider:

  • Whether the support feels appropriate for you

  • The training and ethics of the practitioner

  • How the relationship feels
