How Counselling Works

The counselling process

Counselling is a collaborative process shaped by your needs and experiences. Sessions usually take place weekly and last around 50 minutes. They may be online or face-to-face.

In sessions, you are invited to talk about what matters to you. This might include current difficulties, past experiences, relationships, emotions, or thoughts that feel hard to express elsewhere.

Your counsellor’s role is to listen carefully, offer reflections, and support you to explore your experience more deeply — not to judge, diagnose, or direct you.

What sessions are like

Sessions can feel different from week to week. Some may feel emotional or challenging; others may feel calmer or reflective. This variation is normal.

Counselling does not follow a fixed script. You and your counsellor work together at a pace that feels manageable.

How long counselling lasts

There is no set length of counselling. Some people attend for a short period; others find longer-term support helpful. This is usually reviewed together and can change over time.

Progress is rarely linear. Change often happens gradually, through increased understanding, awareness, and choice.
