Is Counselling Confidential?
How confidentiality works
Confidentiality is a central part of counselling. What you share in sessions is treated with care and respect and is not shared without your consent in most circumstances.
Limits to confidentiality
There are important limits where a counsellor has a legal or ethical duty to act. This may include situations involving:
Serious risk of harm to you or someone else
Safeguarding concerns relating to children or vulnerable adults
Legal requirements to disclose information
Where possible, these situations are discussed with you openly.
Why this matters
Clear confidentiality boundaries help create trust and safety. Your counsellor should explain these limits clearly at the start and answer any questions you have.
