Affordable Counselling: How Our Fee Options Work

Cost is one of the most common reasons people hesitate before starting counselling. You might be wondering whether you can afford it, whether it’s fair to spend money on yourself, or whether choosing a lower-cost option means compromising on quality.

These concerns are completely understandable. Thinking carefully about cost doesn’t mean counselling isn’t important to you — it usually means you’re trying to make a responsible, realistic decision.

Why counselling fees exist

Counselling is delivered within a professionally governed framework. This includes training, supervision, safeguarding, clinical oversight, and organisational support that ensure counselling is safe and ethical.

Fees contribute to:

  • professional training and ongoing development

  • regular clinical supervision

  • safeguarding and risk management

  • secure systems and confidential record-keeping

  • the sustainability of the service

As a charity, we aim to balance accessibility with the responsibility to deliver counselling safely and consistently.

Why we offer different fee options

People’s circumstances vary, and a single fixed fee can exclude many who would benefit from counselling.

Offering different fee options allows us to:

  • widen access for people on lower incomes

  • maintain professional standards across all services

  • use grant funding to subsidise access where it’s most needed

  • remain independent of public-sector contracts

Rather than asking people to justify themselves, we offer a small number of clear, transparent options.

Our counselling fee pathways

While full details are set out on our Fees & Access page, our options broadly include:

  • Professional-rate counselling
Delivered by highly experienced, fully qualified counsellors.

  • Standard counselling
Delivered by qualified counsellors within our core service.

  • Supported access counselling
Lower-cost counselling supported by funding and delivered by developing practitioners under close supervision.

Most people choose the standard option, but the right choice depends on your circumstances and preferences.

Will lower-cost counselling affect quality?

No. All counselling pathways operate within the same clinical governance framework. This means:

  • counsellors are appropriately trained and supervised

  • safeguarding standards apply across all options

  • work is reviewed and supported by the organisation

Differences between options relate to experience level and funding structure — not care, respect, or attention.

How to choose the right option

You don’t need to get this perfectly right at the start. Things to consider include:

  • what feels financially manageable

  • whether you have a preference for experience level

  • how quickly you’re hoping to start

An initial consultation gives you space to talk this through and confirm what feels appropriate.

What if my circumstances change?

We understand that financial situations can change. Fees and access options can be reviewed over time, and conversations about cost are handled sensitively.

Our aim is to support people ethically and fairly, not to create pressure or embarrassment.

When to seek urgent support

Counselling is not an emergency service. If you are feeling unsafe, at immediate risk, or thinking about harming yourself, please seek urgent help through your GP, a local crisis service, NHS 111, or by calling 999 in an emergency.
